Brands Hatch-Indy Circuit
TWO MORE PODIUMS FOR PEAD
4 - 5/June/2005
For rounds five and six the Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cupheads for the first of two visits to Brands Hatch, Kent. Being Ed Pead's home track he'll be looking forward to a pair of wins to extend his championship lead, whereas Jonathan Adam, a winner here at last year's race will also be gunning for victory.
Five minutes before qualifying began a little storm broke out and the track was covered in a glaze of shiny, glistening moisture. Luckily enough however, due to some unmoved vehicles on the track, the qualifying was delayed by twenty minutes which allowed the track to dry. It was Ed Pead who went to provisional pole with Adam, Matt Allison and Tom Onslow-Cole close behind. Halfway through, Pead had dropped to fourth and decided to come in for new tyres for another shot at pole. He managed to go quicker but did not improve his position and had to settle for fourth spot with only hundredths of seconds separating the top four. "I thought I would find more time in the second part of the session but it didn't come so I'll have to race my way out of this". Adam secured pole with Matt Allison, Onslow-Cole and Pead.
Pead started race one from grid four and made a good start, but it was his team-mate Steven Hunter who got a great start from grid six to pass through Pead and Allison. Into the first corner of Paddock Hill there was contact with Hunter and Tom Onslow-Cole which put them both into the gravel and out of the race. In the melee Pead dropped back to fourth and the safety car was deployed for the first time this year. At the restart it was Adam who led Allison, Ben Winrow and Pead. On lap three Pead passed Winrow into the Druids hairpin for third spot then set about chasing the leading pair. On lap ten Pead closed Allison down, who had fallen away from Adam, and passed his team-mate into Druids. "Once I got passed Matt the gap to Adam was too big to close down so I made sure I finished". Pead said after the race. The race finished Adam, Pead and Allison. Adam now leads the championship which was helped by setting the fastest race lap.
Race two was a different story. Pead was starting in fifth spot on the third row, his lowest qualifying so far, and needed a very good start to fight for the lead. At the start it was Winrow in sixth that tried to close Pead in on the run down to Paddock but turned himself round infront of him and fired himself straight into the barrier ending his race. As the pace car joined the track at the exit of Graham Hill, the pack slowed down too quickly with Steven Colbert trying to avoid Tom Onslow-Cole hitting him off the track and into the barrier but he did rejoin at the back of the grid. This left Pead fourth and he was now looking at the podium. At the restart the leading four of Adam, Allison, Colbert and Pead broke away from the pack and on lap nine Pead made a move past Colbert into Druids. These three pulled clear and this was how it stayed till the flag, with Adam taking his third win of the season and Pead his sixth podium of the season. Pead said "Starting from the third row you're never quite sure how good the start will be for you, but it wasn't too bad. I got into third early on but couldn't close down the front two. I have to make sure I qualify further up so I'm not playing catch up through the race" Adam's lead has now increased to fourteen points as the championship heads north to Oulton Park, Cheshire on 18 / 19 June.
