Knockhill
Pead Scores A Double Win
26 - 27 August/2005

Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup headed far north to the highlands of Scotland for rounds thirteen and fourteen of the championship.  Knockhill is the shortest track on the calendar but is the most exciting with every bit of circuit either aiming upwards or facing downwards.  A real driver’s track to separate the men from the boys!

Qualifying at Knockhill is so important here as the tight and twisty track can prove almost impossible to pass.  Championship leader Jonathan Adam from TCR started very well by heading the times by half distance.  Close in his tracks was his team mate Tom Onslow-Cole followed by fellow rival Ed Pead.  As Pead came in for new tyres it only took him three laps to edge infront of Adam.  Adam in turn returned the favour until four minutes to go Pead put in a stunning lap to claim his second pole position of the season by five hundredths of a second.  Boulevard Racing team mate Matt Allison also joined in by snatching third from Onslow-Cole and made it a Boulevard front row for Pead and Allison for race two on Sunday.

Race one and it was Pead who headed the pack closely followed by Adam and Allison.  At the end of the first lap Pead had pulled just under a second over Adam and began to pull away.  Allison was looking like he could pass Adam but instead he got his head down and stated to chase Pead down.  On lap eleven he had caught Pead but didn’t make any attempt to pass and the two started to pull away from the chasing pack.  Allison had his mirrors full of Onslow-Cole and the pair started to fight for third place losing even more time to the leading pair.  Towards the end of the race Adam was looking in good shape and started to hound Pead but Pead kept his nerve and made his car as wide as possible and barely a tenth of a second separated them as they crossed the line for the last lap.  Adam desperate to get past to increase his lead and Pead desperate to win to close him down, it was all down to the last corner, the hairpin.  Pead blocked down the inside and Adam took to the outside, he switched back on the exit as Pead moved over he switched back again and the pair were side by side up the hill towards the finish line, and it was Pead who won by thirteen thousandths of a second.  The action didn’t finish there, Allison had an disappointing last lap as his suspension broke and handed third spot to Onslow-Cole.  A delighted Pead said “I thought he’d got me. He had the pace on me coming out of the hairpin because I was tight on the way in and he was a bit better on the way out. I didn’t know I’d won until my team pointed at me and mouthed ‘number one’. All through the race he was closing up on me and then falling back again so I knew he was just biding his time. If he does that tomorrow I’ll be on the inside of the corner.”

Race two had a totally different look, the heavens opened and down came the rain, it was the first wet Clio race in three years.  Pead from pole position lead the pack into Duffers Dip with Onslow-Cole glued to his heels, and Adam had a poor start and ended the first lap in fourth spot behind Pead’s team mate Allison.  Pead began to pull away and on lap three Adam made his way past Allison and was soon on the back of Onslow-Cole.  Adam was hounding him and the 18 year-old cracked under the pressure on entry to the first corner allowing Adam to slip through and chase Pead.  By lap twelve Adam had again caught Pead but couldn’t get close enough to go for a serious move.  Adam was only less than half a second behind for the rest of the race but Pead didn’t succumb to the pressure and took the chequered flag for a double victory weekend.  Pead commented It’s been a great weekend!  I’ve had two pole positions and two wins!  I’ve closed him down in the championship albeit a small amount but every point counts at this stage.  I’m already looking forward to Donington.”

The series now heads to the Midlands for the Renault World Series Festival at Donington Park on 10th/11th September.
