Oulton Park
PEAD AND ADAM TAKE A WIN A PIECE
x - x Month/2005

The series heads north to Oulton Park in Cheshire for rounds seven and eight of the Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup. Jonathan Adam took both wins here last year and aims to do the same, while Ed Pead will be going for nothing but race wins to retake the championship lead.

It was all going to be about qualifying, Oulton Park has proved in previous years that it's very hard to pass so whoever made it into the first corner first would normally take the spoils. As early as lap three Adam set the pace then Pead retaliated on the next lap to go quicker by four tenths with Adam again putting in the pole time, another four tenths quicker, to go quickest at the end. Pead pitted for new tyres for another run at pole and on his third lap he had edged to within five hundredths of Adam and these two a clear half a second from the rest of the pack and on the front row for both races.

In race one, Pead and Adam got off the line together but it was Nick Adcock who got the better start to pull alongside Pead into the first corner. Pead braved it round the outside and got a tap from Adcock which put him sideways on the exit of Old Hall. Pead kept his foot in and kept his position behind Adam. These two pulled clear of the pack and by lap seven Adam had pulled two seconds on Pead who commented "He had the legs on me on the first part of the race but I started to close in towards the end of the race." By the end of the race he had closed the gap to just over a second but had to settle for second place with his team-mate Matt Allison holding off Adcock for third spot. Adam increased his lead to twenty points and both start on the front row for tomorrow's race which will be another close finish.

Race two began in the midday sun and again both Adam and Pead headed into the first corner side by side. Pead slotted in firmly behind Adam and these two began to make a break from the pack. It was very much looking like a repeat of yesterday's race with Adam pulling a second clear by lap nine. Lap ten Pead had reeled him in a little and looked like he was closing in a little, lap eleven and Pead was glued to the rear bumper of Adam. It was obvious now that Adam was defending and Pead was looking for a way past. Then on the penultimate lap Pead made a sensational move down the inside at Cascades, the long sweeping downhill left hander, and into first place. Pead pulled a slight lead and held to the finish to take his second win of the season. A very happy Pead said "This was a great race, Boulevard gave me great car and I was able to win. I knew Adam would pull on me at the beginning of the race as he had a new front tyre, but if I could stay close enough early on I knew I'd have the legs on him at the end. When his car was going off I kept it tidy and closed back up and overtook. Today we played it right and won".

Adam's lead was reduced only a couple of points to eighteen as he again got the fastest lap of the race.

The championship heads even further north on 16 / 17 July at Croft, North Yorkshire.
