Snetterton
Pead Claims Lap Record But Fails To Gain On Adams Misfortunes
6 - 7 August/2005
The Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup has now reached Snetterton, Norfolk for rounds eleven and twelve of the championship. In the height of summer the pressure is certainly on for the Clio drivers as they fight for top class honours!
In qualifying it was looking like a TCR front row with Tom Onslow-Cole and championship leader, Jonathon Adam, holding the fort. A late charge from fifth position in the dying stages saw championship contender Ed Pead snatch a front row position, splitting the TCR team-mates by only nine-hundredths off pole.
With the top three in the championship lined up in the first three positions it was going to prove a tough race for Pead, Onslow-Cole and Adam. At the start it was Pead and Onslow-Cole side by side into the first corner, Pead dropped into line and these two started to make a break for it, Adam didn't have such a good start and ended the first lap in sixth position. Halfway through the race Pead started to harass Onslow-Cole and in doing so Neil Waterworth had caught them and began to join in the battle. As Pead looked up the inside of Onslow-Cole at the end of the back straight, both were slow out and allowed Waterworth a run on the pair of them. He realised he wasn't going to pass them and slotted in behind Pead. A misjudgement on his part meant he tagged the rear of Pead and sent him bouncing across the infield. Pead rejoined, got himself sorted and began to reel in the leaders. In doing so he got the fastest race lap and also the lap record. This left Onslow-Cole in the lead and to take his second win of the season with Adam and Waterworth second and third respectively. Pead said "It's a shame I got tagged as I was looking for the race win. This is what happens when you get inexperienced people racing at the top, they make mistakes and it can cost dearly. I'll have to put it right for tomorrow's race"
Race two began with Adam and Onslow-Cole side by side for the first half of a lap then entering the Esses for the first time Onslow-Cole bunched everyone up on the way in causing a concertina effect, resulting in Pead making contact with Adam. Adam rejoined but was at the back of the field. Onslow-Cole managed to pull a comfortable lead in the first six laps but then the gap began to close lap by lap as Pead started hunting him down. On lap nine Pead had caught him and again began to attack. A couple of laps later he made a move at the Russell chicane, both cars touched but carried on. On the next lap Pead's front upright had broken and he failed to finish. This left Onslow-Cole to win again with Pead's team-mate, Matt Allison, in second and TCR's Ben Winrow in third for his first podium finish of the season. Pead commented "I can't believe my suspension broke, me and Cole did touch but I didn't think there was much damage as we only glanced each other. There obviously was and unfortunately not finished, I don't suppose it's too bad a weekend as Adam will have to drop this round as well".
The series now heads North to Knockhill, Scotland on 27th / 28th August, a track where action is always a plenty with Clios, and the only track in the country where the cars are airborne over the notorious chicane!
