Ed Pead Suffers In Qualifying
13 - 14 October/2007
Renault Aftersales racers Ed Pead reflected on a tough race to end their ELF Renault Clio Cup campaign, having brought his car to the finish in 21st place at Sunday's Thruxton finale
The size of the entry list meant there was just one qualifying session, followed by a championship race at the end of the day.
Pead suffered a catalogue of misfortune in his Ixell, Ixtar, Rapide Bodycare, RAMB, Renaultp@rts, Motrio and Renault Trade Partner-backed car, but still managed an impressive showing.
In the morning the driver ahead lost a sump unit, Pead running into the oil it dropped and suffering an accident taking in three other cars.
Pead experienced more bad luck in the race when he was rammed from behind, dropping to 18th. He recovered a number of places before six cars ahead of him spun out on oil, eventually coming in eighth.
Northampton-based Pead, 29, currently holds fifth place in the championship with 162 points in his Mardi Gras Motorsport-prepared Clio 197, but hopes to move up the order with a haul of points from 10th on the grid at tomorrow's 12-lap race.
He said: "The car was very badly damaged, every panel had a dent on it. Once the guys had rebuilt it, the car handled very well. From 10th, I'll just have to go for it."
Sunday's race was affected by several major collisions; including again being caught up in someone else's accident the Renault Aftersales driver steered through the chaos to finish 19th (Pead).
Pead was handed a two second penalty at the end of the race, which dropped him to an eventual 21st.
He ends the year in fifth in the championship.
