Pead Debuts in Asian F3 Championship
Strong Positioning for Introduction
28 - 30 March /2008
The last round of the 2007-8 Asian F3 Championship was held at Batangas Race Circuit in Manila, Philippines. The Championship finale was to hold six races over three days.
In qualifying it was Fredric Vervisch who took pole position ahead of Rafael Suzuki and Matt Howson. Ed Pead of Aran Racing, impressed with his pace setting fourth fastest time ahead of his team mate, Leonardo Valois. Pead commented "From testing I knew it would be very hard to get a front row start so I just concentrated on improving my lap times further. I am really pleased with qualifying in such a good position in my first time in an F3 car. I've been getting faster each day so now I'm looking to challenge for a podium position."
In the first race of the weekend Pead moved straight into third after Vervisch stalled at the start. Suzuki led Howson to the end but it was Vervisch, on the move setting fastest race lap, caught Pead and passed him on lap five. "I'm very happy with my result as I got off the line on my first attempt and had a little battle for third, I kept it consistent and brought the car home" said Pead.
Pead went on to finish the next race again in fourth but had to battle with Suzuki who finally passed him for third into the first corner on the penultimate lap. "Today has been a great experience for me, both races I was fighting for a podium and only just lost out in the second race because I made a little inexperienced mistake under braking and he managed to nip past. If I can keep this up then I'm sure a podium is possible."
The following day Pead made the podium in the first race with second fastest race lap and took a consistent fourth in the second race with third fastest race lap. His efforts were impressive especially as this was his first week of stepping into an F3 car. Vervisch was the man to beat today taking both wins ahead of his team mate Suzuki and Howson. In the final two races on Sunday Pead got a fourth and another podium. "It's been a great week for me, I'm really happy to have achieved two podiums in my first weekend racing an F3. I was a little concerned about my fitness for the race but once I'd finished the first race I felt more confident for the following races. Aran Racing has done a great job with the car and I'm pleased I managed to get a few results for them as well and even finished fifth in the Championship. "
